In this exclusive Gramercy Salon@2424 program, Ross Gay will be in conversation with poet, essayist and cultural critic Hanif Abdurraqib, author of the forthcoming Go Ahead in The Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest, a book that conveys the wonder of being a fan and the visceral impact of experiencing the feeling of having oneself reflected back in music and pop culture.
Hanif Abdurraqib is a nationally-recognized, Columbus-based poet, essayist, and cultural critic. He is the author of The Crown Ain’t Worth Much (nominated for a Hurston-Wright Legacy Award) and They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us (named a best book of 2017 by NPR, Pitchfork, Oprah Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, Slate, Esquire, GQ, and Publisher’s Weekly, among others). A Callaloo Creative Writing Fellow, the poetry editor at Muzzle Magazine, and a member of the poetry collective Echo Hotel, Abdurraqib has multiple forthcoming books, including a new collection of poems called A Fortune For Your Disaster (Tin House, 2019) and a history of Black performance in the United States titled They Don’t Dance No Mo’ (Random House, 2020).

Denison University’s Beck Series welcomes award winning author Min Jin Lee.
Lee is a recipient of fellowships in Fiction from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study at Harvard. Her novel “Pachinko” was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction, a runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, winner of the Medici Book Club Prize, and a New York Times 10 Best Books of 2017. Carnegie Author Series featuring Paula McLain
Paula McLain is the author of the New York Times bestselling novels The Paris Wife (2011) and Circling the Sun (2015). Having focused on Ernest Hemingway’s first two wives in The Paris Wife, McLain’s latest title, Love and Ruin (2018) deftly turns to the life of his third wife, writer and war correspondent Martha Gellhorn.
McLain was born in Fresno, California in 1965. After being abandoned by both parents, she and her two sisters became wards of the California court system, moving in and out of various foster homes for the next 14 years. When she aged out of the system, she supported herself by working as a nurse’s aid in a convalescent hospital, a pizza delivery girl, an auto-plant worker and a cocktail waitress before discovering she could write. She received her MFA in poetry from the University of Michigan in 1996.
The recipient of fellowships from Yaddo, The MacDowell Colony, Cleveland Arts Prize, Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, McLain is also the author of two collections of poetry, a memoir, Like Family, Growing up in Other People’s Houses (2003), and a first novel, A Ticket to Ride (2009). She lives with her family in Cleveland.

An Evening with Israeli-Palestinian author and columnist Sayed Kashua
Sayed Kashua is a journalist born in Tira, Israel. Kashua, a Palestinian citizen of Israel is known for his books and humorous columns in Hebrew. He is the author of three novels: “Dancing Arabs,” “Let it Be Morning,” “Second Person Singular” and “Native: Dispatches from an Israeli-Palestinian Life.” Kashua created and writes for the award-winning hit Israeli TV show “Arab Labor,” and is the focus of the documentary “Forever Scared.”
His novel, “Dancing Arabs,” has been made into a feature film, and premiered in 2014 at the Telluride Film Festival. Kashua is the winner of many awards, including the prestigious Bernstein Prize.
Kashua will speak about his experience as a Palestinian citizen of Israel in a world that tolerates him but never manages to accept him with open arms. In a humorous,
tongue-in-cheek style, Kashua addresses the problems faced by Arabs in Israel, caught between two worlds.
Light refreshments will be served. Child care available and can be reserved at registration.

Salvatore Scibona‘s first novel, The End, was a finalist for the National Book Award and winner of the Young Lions Fiction Award. That novel began as a short story for which Scibona, ten years earlier, won Ohioana Library’s Marvin Grant for writers age 30 or younger who have not yet published a book. Scibona’s work has also won a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Pushcart Prize, an O. Henry Award, and a Whiting Award; and the New Yorker named him one of its “20 Under 40” fiction writers to watch. Conrade Hinds was born in Nashville and graduated from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he studied architecture and industrial technology. He has lived in Ohio for forty years and previously worked for the Franklin County Engineer’s Office and several architecture firms. A registered architect and a retired projects manager with the City of Columbus Department of Public Utilities, he is also a retired adjunct faculty member in the Engineering Technology Department at Columbus State Community College. He has published two other books, The Great Columbus Experiment of 1908 and Columbus and the Great Flood of 1913.

Sarah Weinman’s most recent book The Real Lolita: The Kidnapping of Sally Horner and the Novel That Scandalized the World (Ecco, 2018) casts a new light on the dark inspiration for Nabokov’s classic. Sarah is also the editor of Women Crime Writers: Eight Suspense Novels of the 1940s & 50s (Library of America, 2015) and Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives (Penguin, 2013). Sandra Feen currently works as an independent poetry and urban fiction editor, and has been a featured reader in venues in and out of Ohio for over 30 years. In addition, she performs work by Holocaust writers in Susan Millard Schwarz’s Anahata Music Project. Sandy has a BFA in Creative Writing and a BS in Education from Bowling Green State University, as well as an MA in Literature from Wright State University. Her publications include Cap City Poets: Columbus and Central Ohio’s Best Known, Read, and Requested Poets, Pudding Magazine, Pudding House Gang, The Ides of March, Poetry Motel, Everything Stops and Listens, and Elastic Ekphrastic. A collection of her poems was named finalist for The Lascaux Review’s 2018 Lascaux Poetry Prize.

David Baker is the author of twelve books of poetry, including Swift: New and Selected Poems (2019, W. W. Norton), Scavenger Loop (2015, Norton), and the Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Prize Winner, Never-Ending Birds (2009, Norton), as well as six books of prose. Among his awards are prizes and grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Society of America, Mellon Foundation, and the Society of Midland Authors. Baker holds the Thomas B. Fordham Chair at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where he lives, and is Poetry Editor of the Kenyon Review.

Denison University’s Beck Series welcomes Poet Laureate of Ohio, Dave Lucas presenting a reading.
Lucas was born and raised in Cleveland. His first book of poems, “Weather,” received the 2012 Ohioana Book Award for Poetry. Named by Rita Dove as one of thirteen young poets to watch, Lucas has also received a Discovery/The Nation Prize and a Cleveland Arts Prize. In 2018, Lucas was appointed the second Poet Laureate of the State of Ohio. A co-founder of Cleveland Book Week and Brews + Prose at Market Garden Brewery, he lives in Cleveland, where he teaches at Case Western Reserve University.

Write to the Finish is led by award-winning writers Tania Casselle & Sean Murphy, National Endowment for the Arts Fellow in Creative Writing.
A 9-month, online course by email & phone so you can take part wherever you are. Nobody can write your book for you, but you don’t have to be alone in the process. In our Write to the Finish course, we support you through the challenge of writing a book with craft, community, focus and feedback.
You get personal support from two published authors, including a full manuscript critique, online seminar days, craft lessons and writing exercises, and regular coaching calls. (Support on marketing too if you’re at that stage.)
Open to fiction and nonfiction or memoir writers, whether starting your book idea from scratch or finishing a work in progress – perhaps it’s not progressing fast enough or the writer is stuck! If you’re serious about writing a book in 2019, we are taking registrations now, with a generous early bird discount on registrations before March 13. This small group course runs only once a year – now in our 14th successful year of helping people write their books.
